Air Purifier Types

What is an Air Purifier?

Air purifiers, also known as air cleaners, are powerful tools for improving indoor air quality. These portable or fixed appliances remove a wide range of contaminants, making your air healthier and more breathable.

Air purifiers utilise various filtration processes, each targeting specific pollutants. To achieve the most comprehensive cleaning, many purifiers combine several of these technologies.

How Do Air Purifiers Work?

Air purifiers draw in polluted air and pass it through a series of filters. Each filter targets specific contaminants, like pollen, dust, or smoke. Once cleaned, the air is recirculated back into the room, providing a healthier indoor environment.

There are four different types of filters ranging from Hepa filters, Carbon filters, UV filters and Ionic filters.

High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters

These filters excel in capturing microscopic airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns with an impressive efficiency of 99.97%. The effectiveness of these filters is measured by particle size known as Most Penetrating Particle Size (MPPS filter). HEPA filters act as a robust defence against allergens, dust, pollen, mould spores, and even some bacteria, promoting a cleaner and healthier breathing environment.

Activated carbon filters

The filters are not designed to remove dust or allergens from the air. Carbon filters create a chemical reaction to odour pollutants such as smoke, chemical fumes, gas and other smells as they flow through their adsorbent filter processes. These filters are ideal for tackling environments with persistent odours, ensuring fresh and breathable air.

UV light filtration processes

This produces amazing results in extracting bacterial viruses etc. however they are not capable of removing dust or other solids from your air. Some air cleaners use UV light and electromagnetic radiation to break down and remove influenza-type bacteria and viruses.

Ionisers

Air ioniser purifiers employ electrically charged air and gas ions to remove airborne pollutants. These ions, positively or negatively charged, attract oppositely charged airborne particles. The attracted particles then clump together and adhere to collector plates within the purifier. These collector plates can be conveniently cleaned regularly using antibacterial wipes or fluids, eliminating the need for filter replacements.

It's important to note that this process generates trace amounts of ozone as a by-product. However, these levels are generally well below 0.05 parts per million (PPM). Air ionisers come in two main varieties:

  • Fan-less models: Ideal for targeted cleaning in smaller areas.
  • Fan-assisted models: Designed to manage larger volumes of air in more spacious environments.

Air Purifier Hire FAQs

The human eye can't detect dust and airborne contaminants but these tiny particles, like silica dust (spread whilst working with plaster, mortar, concrete or brick) or MDF fibres, pose a significant health risk. They can settle deep within your lungs, potentially causing irritation and even long-term damage. Our highly efficient air cleaners are designed to separate dust and particulates down to a level of 0.3 micrometres.

Handheld tools like grinders and sanders are notorious for creating clouds of dust. While good dust extractors can capture a significant amount of dust at the source, they may not capture everything.

For optimal dust control, we recommend combining a dust extractor with an air purifier. Here's why:

  • Dust Extractors: Capture dust particles directly at the tool, minimising airborne spread.
  • Air Purifiers: Address any remaining airborne dust particles, ensuring a cleaner overall environment.

Together, these two solutions provide the most comprehensive approach to dust management, creating a healthier and safer work environment.

With growing urban populations, British cities face rising levels of air pollution, particularly from particulate matter (PM). This pollution can be harmful, containing particles from:

  • Traffic: Exhaust fumes, tyre dust, and brake dust from congested roads.
  • Fuel Combustion: Emissions from central heating boilers and other sources.
  • Construction and Industry: Dust from construction sites, factories, and quarries.

Indoor Air Quality Matters Too

While outdoor pollution is a concern, indoor air quality can be even worse. Studies show indoor air can be 2-5 times, and sometimes even 100 times, more polluted than outdoor air. Indoor pollutants include:

  • Dust
  • Mould
  • Pollen
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Radon
  • Silica

These pollutants can trigger asthma, lung disease, and even cancer, especially for children and people with compromised immune systems. The frequent use of an air purifier/air cleaner removes these hazardous particles from the air and reduces the risk of these health issues.

Before renting or purchasing an air purifier, consider these key factors:

  1. Size Matters: Selecting the Right Capacity
Air purifiers are designed and tested for specific room sizes. To ensure optimal performance, choose an air purifier with a recommended room size that equals or exceeds the size of your room. This guarantees sufficient air circulation and effective cleaning throughout the space.
  2. Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): Understanding Efficiency
Look for the CADR rating when comparing air purifiers. This independent certification, established by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), measures an air purifier's effectiveness in removing pollutants. It considers room size and calculates the volume of clean air delivered per minute (CFM). Generally, a higher CADR indicates stronger performance.
  3. CADR and Pollutants
The CADR rating is typically provided for three common pollutants: dust, smoke, and pollen. Choose an air purifier with the highest CADR for the pollutant that concerns you most. For example, if you suffer from allergies, prioritise a high dust CADR rating.
  4. Power Consumption
While often overlooked, power consumption is important. Air purifiers are designed for continuous operation. Lower wattage models are more energy-efficient and cost-effective to run in the long term.

At CAS-Hire, we prioritise the safety of our customers. While ionic air purifiers offer benefits like dust reduction, there have been some concerns raised about ozone production.

Our ionic air purifiers meet strict government safety standards. These standards ensure the ozone output is below 0.05 parts per million (ppm), a level considered safe by regulatory agencies.

Our carefully selected range of air cleaners/air purifiers are designed to perform to the highest standards in the removal of smoke, car exhaust fumes, household chemical fumes, smelly odours and other hazardous VOC’s (Volatile Organic compounds).

Yes. Whether it’s at home, in a hospital, classroom, nursery or open plan office our range of air cleaners/air purifiers use specially patented filter technology to catch 99.97% of airborne bacteria. Our products defend against influenza and other bacterial viruses that spread rapidly within our everyday indoor environments. Our super silent and extremely efficient air filtration products not only help to protect against airborne bacteria they also ensure the germ particles are not released back into the air.

Microns (µm) are a unit of measurement used to describe tiny particles. One micron is equal to one millionth of a meter. In the context of air purifiers, particle size is crucial because it determines what an air purifier can capture.

  • Small Particles (Less than 1 micron): These include harmful pollutants like chemical fumes, smoke, viruses, and bacteria. They are easily inhaled deep into the lungs due to their size.
  • Medium Particles (1-100 microns): This category encompasses allergens like pollen, dust particles, and some larger bacteria. While inhaled, these are more likely to be caught in the upper airways.
  • Large Particles (100 microns and above): These include visible elements like dust, pet dander, and some mould spores. They are generally too large to be inhaled deeply.

Why Microns Matter

The most concerning particles for our health are incredibly small, measuring as low as 0.3 microns. These tiny particles can be inhaled and become lodged deep within our lungs, potentially causing various health problems like cardiovascular issues, headaches, and even cancer.

Air Purifier Selection

By understanding microns and particle size, you can choose an air purifier that effectively targets the pollutants most relevant to your needs. Many air purifiers, especially HEPA filters, are designed to capture particles as small as 0.3 microns, offering significant health benefits.

Just like any hardworking appliance, air purifiers require regular maintenance to function optimally. Here's why changing your air purifier filters frequently is important:

  • Preserve Performance: Clogged filters create resistance for the fan motor, making it work harder. This can lead to overheating and potential damage to the air purifier itself.
  • Maintains Clean Air: Dirty filters lose their effectiveness in capturing pollutants. Replacing them ensures your air purifier continues to remove harmful particles and allergens from your breathing space.
  • Reduces Energy Costs: A clogged filter forces the air purifier to work harder to pull air through it. This translates to higher energy consumption and increased running costs.
  • Extends Lifespan: Regular filter changes not only improve performance but also help extend the overall lifespan of your air purifier.

By following the recommended filter replacement schedule for your specific air purifier model, you can ensure it operates efficiently, keeps your air clean, and avoids unnecessary wear and tear.

CAS-Hire can provide replacement filters and costs vary depending on model and type of filter required, from between £15.00 – £600.00. Contact us for more details.

The simple answer to this is Yes.

Do you live, for example, on a new unfinished construction site, in the centre of a busy large city, close to a busy road, motorway or airport?

Do you work in an environment surrounded by flowers, fields or shrubs producing high levels of pollen during the summer months?

Are chemicals or fertilizers sprayed regularly to maintain weeds, and insects or enhance lawn growth nearby?

Do you suffer health issues during house refurbishments e.g. new carpets, flood damage or have you recently moved property?

Do you, your family, colleagues or students suffer from ongoing health issues? such as asthma, hay fever, allergies, headaches, tired, irritated eyes, nose or throat or easily susceptible to influenza and other viruses and germs?

CAS-Hire Air Purifiers: Breathe Easier at Home

Our air purifiers act as a powerful defence against these everyday threats. By continuously filtering the air, they capture:

  • Dust particles
  • Smoke
  • Pollen
  • Allergens (like pet dander)
  • And other harmful contaminants

This filtration process helps create a cleaner, healthier indoor environment, allowing you to go about your daily life with greater peace of mind.

While air purifiers are fantastic tools for improving indoor air quality, they don't eliminate the need for dusting altogether. Here's why:

  • Targeting Airborne Particles: Air purifiers excel at capturing airborne particles like dust mites, pollen, and allergens that circulate in the air.
  • Surface Settled Dust: Heavier dust particles like those that settle on furniture and surfaces are too large to be effectively drawn into the air purifier.
