The desiccant material / silica gel wheel is continually rotating, typically at three revolutions per hour. As the wheel rotates a small portion passes through the regeneration segment. During this phase a second air stream (Regeneration Air) is heated to a high temperature before passing over the wheel. Any moisture present in the wheel is released into this air stream, this hot wet air is then exhausted outside the area being dried.
Desiccant dehumidifiers / dryers do not rely purely on cooling the air to extract the moisture, they’re known to operate and perform well when used in colder temperatures. As there is no water (only hot wet air) produced during the drying process, the units can perform efficiently at well below 0 Deg Celsius. If drying moist air for industrial applications, both pre-cooling (damp humid air removed as condensation) and a desiccant rotor (damp humid air removed by absorption) in the same air system is a regular system used in the workplace.
